On Another Planet

Someone once told me that when your daughters are young, you might be on the same page as them, but as they get older like around 10yrs old, you're not even in the same book, and as they get even older (teenagers) you're not even in the same world. Well I've come to believe that when they are teenagers they are completely on another planet. Can I get an Amen??
Both my daughters are very good children and I love them dearly, but they are on another planet. The things they say or do sometimes are not of this world. We just don't agree on anything, and when I'm trying to give advice or just my opinion, they take it as I'm lecturing or they feel I just want to be right. Feel free to give any advice on this. Other than that we have great relationship and I'm truly blessed to have both of them as my daughters.

Growing Up

Well I got to tell you, this kid has come a long way. There was a time when I honestly thought he might need some medication. Not for his behavior as much, but for his hyperactivity. He was bouncing off the wall, it was hard to get him to just chill. In this last year Taejshon has really grown up, He listens a whole lot better, he's not as hyper as he once was, in Sunday School and Pre-School he listens to the Teachers and participates in the class activities. WOW!!!! He also has a good heart, he loves to help the other kids if there crying or sad. I'm very proud of him...

Finding Good Friends

Like any parent, when it comes to your children picking friends, we all hope they pick the right ones. I can't believe some of the stories I hear my Daughters tell about what's going on with their friends, the disloyalty, the back-stabbing, the hating, I try to give my 2 cents and say "that's not a true friend", but they look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about. I pray they will listen to me and choose their friends wisely, I tell them that friends are important and some last a life-time.

Tough Love

Like other parents my age, we grew up in an era of the "belt on the butt discipline". And believe me our generation is way more respectful, responsible, we had work ethics, I don't think the kids now a days even know what that means. I've come to realize that it's all our fault, We're too busy trying to protect our children from the way we had it. Maybe you were poor, or parents were druggies or alcoholics, or whatever it might be. We take whatever it is and we say I'll never raise my kids like this, or my kids will have it way better than I did. Well I feel the same way, however do you remember when your Mom or Dad were mad at you for whatever and that feeling that you would have in your heart, you would try to avoid seeing or talking to them for a while, hoping they'll forget...that feeling in your chest is fear and disappointment mixed together. As a kid do you remember doing something wrong and saying "oh man, I'm so in trouble". Listen, to feel like that your parents had installed a sense of fear in you, for every time you mess up you were nervous of the end result. And mostly it was disappointing your parents that would hurt the most.

In these days you can't use the "belt on the butt technique", you might lose your children, so I don't advise that as the way to go, I'm using the sit on the toilet method, basically having to tell them to stop doing something more than 3 times "go sit on the toilet", and it's usually for only 2 mins, it's like a Hockey penalty. So now when they start getting out of control I just suggest "Oh do you guys want to go sit on the toilet?" And of course it's a quick "No" and a quick shape up, for a little while anyways. This seems to be working, I explain to them what they have done wrong and they'll have a couple of minutes to think about it. I will give an update in a couple Months or so. (maybe sooner)

Fun at the Aquarium

We went to the Aquarium with the boys and Daejsha, and there were way too many people!!!! But we still managed to have a great time. The dolphins were the best part, the octopus was definitely the creepiest, but the parana fish were the coolest. They had a 4D show as well, and the boys could not keep their glasses on because they were so scared. Taejshon was ready to go not even 5 minutes into it. We saw the Beluga Whale and a lot of exotic fish including the Sea horse which I can say I've now seen..

When can boys call me?

There comes a time when every father who has daughters must make that decision. I've decided that this is probably the time. Shaylynn my oldest daughter, who is 16yrs old asked if she could have boys call the house. Well I thought about it for a sec, sure why not, she really only had one particular boy she wanted to call her, even though they talk at school and through facebook. So I told her if her friend was willing to come over first and meet the family, then he could call the house. Well he never came over and that was that. I don't know if that was the right decision or not, maybe Shaylynn figures he's just not the right boy to bring home. (yeah right..)

Bedtime drama

It seems to always take about an extra hour to get these guys to bed. Around 9 o'clock we'll say "okay it's time for bathroom and bed," and like clock-work the prolonging begins. It will first start with, "Can I have a night-night snack, even though the answer is no, somehow they end up with something. After the night-night snack comes the real drama, we let them watch a movie and they're suppose to switch who picks the movie every night, well somehow that just never works, it ends up becoming a big argument. Well really it's just my youngest son Taejshon, somehow he's never wrong, I wonder where he gets that from. Anyways we've switched to the calender system, where we put each ones initial on every other day, so far it's been a success, sorta...

Sleep through summer

Wow!!! I can't believe how long one person can sleep, Daejsha (my second oldest 12yrs old) does not come out of her room until at least 2pm. She comes out, looks around and says "hi dad", goes in the kitchen and makes a microwave egg sandwich, then back to her dungeon for another couple hours, then out again to ask "what you making for dinner?" Unbelievable.... I would be a little worried but she stays up pretty late reading the Twilight series. And I've seen the size of those books they're like 4 bibles put together..
